European MBS vols up in Q1

European securitisation issuance was up 40% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2006, with mortgage-backed securities (MBS) the largest sector of the market, according to figures from the European Securitisation Forum (ESF).

Issuance in the first quarter of 2006 hit EUR65 billion, up 40% from the first quarter of 2005. However, this represents a slowdown from the fourth quarter of last year, when EUR135 billion of asset-backed securities were issued. The fourth quarter of the year is
