Charles Li says stock connect programme can be expanded significantly

Despite the Shanghai-Hong Kong stock connect initially being a vehicle solely to trade cash equities from the city into mainland China, the transformative stage will be when derivative products are included in the development, says Charles Li, chief executive of the Hong Kong Exchange.

The stock connect went live on November 17, and allows Hong Kong-based firms to trade Shanghai stocks (northbound) and China firms to trade Hong Kong stocks (southbound) subject to a daily quota. The development
