In some respects, China’s investor community is in the same boat as its counterparts across the region – low savings rates and flagging equity markets have meant that investors are clamouring for products that offer a little more juice. Where China differs, however, is in the strict regulatory environment, which has hampered the range of structured investment products that can be offered to the country’s investors.

For a start, the Chinese currency is strictly controlled
