Just prior to the Credit Awards Americas in 2008, UK bank Barclays acquired the North American investment banking and capital markets business of Lehman Brothers for just $250 million, following that firm’s untimely demise. The deal completed on September 22, 2008, just one week after Lehman filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, and saw Barclays gain trading assets worth an estimated $72 billion and trading liabilities worth $68 billion.
