So when the synthetic credit market reached crisis point in the last quarter of 2008, perhaps it was appropriate that the US bank seemed to be pretty much the only counterparty remaining active in the market. The bank might ultimately have been responsible for getting investors into some of their troubles, but while its competitors left their investors stranded as they shut up – some to reopen for business only a few months later as markets
