The seeds of JP Morgan's emergence as regional powerhouse in the interest rates derivatives market in the past year were sown when Tarun Mahrotri joined the US dealer in mid-2006 as head of fixed-income sales and trading for Asia. Mahrotri, who built his business and local markets reputation at HSBC, immediately went about extending JP Morgan's interest rate and foreign exchange derivatives franchise.

The idea was to use the bank's strong reputation in the region, its underused onshore banking
