The Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX), the first voluntary system for trading greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the US, launched in January, with 14 organisations signing up as founding members.

Membership of the CCX commits companies to reducing their GHG emissions by 4% from average 1998-2001 levels by 2006. The exchange, which is the first legally binding ‘cap-and-trade’ programme of its kind in the US, expects trading in emissions reduction credits to start in the spring of 2003. Cap-and-trade
