Banco Simeón resulted from the merger of the former Extremadura, Luso Español and Simeón banks, all part of the Portuguese group Caixa Geral de Depósitos, which has operated in Spain since 1991 and – along with Banco Espirito Santo – is one of the two main Portuguese banks operating in the neighbouring Iberian market
