Bail-in bond issuance bolsters Barclays' capital

Barclays' issue of $2 billion of additional Tier 1 bonds helped support its leverage ratio and bail-in buffers in the first quarter.

AT1 outstanding increased to £13.3 billion from £11.9 billion at end-2018 on the back of the debt sale. The bank's total Tier 1 capital – made up of the sum of Common Equity Tier 1 and AT1 instruments – climbed to £54.7 billion at end-March, from £53 billion the prior quarter.

This helped lift its average UK leverage ratio 10 basis points to 4.6% on the quarter
