2011: The year of the hacktivist

More than half of the data theft from firms in 2011 was the result of ‘hacktivism' – online hacking that aims to advance political or social objectives – according to an annual study.

The most recent Data Breach Investigations Report, compiled by New York-based data protection company Verizon, reported that hacktivism accounted for 58% of data thefts last year. This is the first time the majority of attacks has not been carried out by financially motivated criminals.
