Types of operational risk loss by event, January 2008 to January 2010

Two of the top-five losses reported in January were from credit fraud events. The largest loss, a real estate fraud occurring in France, is an example of how an external fraud scheme can affect multiple financial institutions within a particular geographic region. Retail customers affected by the fraud accuse banks of failing to adequately scrutinise loan details.

The second-largest loss involved a fraudulent reinsurance
