Market pressure and regulators are forcing hedge funds to focus more on operational risk. For many fund executives, most risk and compliance issues are a bit of a novelty. By Victoria Pennington

Concern over the robustness of operational risk practices at hedge funds is growing. Many funds started out with a 'small company' mentality, with limited infrastructure even though they were handling billions of dollars. The rapid growth of funds, however, means they will find it more difficult to trade as 'virtual' companies.

A 2007 survey by Ernst & Young estimated that the global hedge fund
