Asian Financial Forum: Speculative capital a ‘greater risk' to Asia than global financial crisis

Speculative inflows into the region could present a greater threat to the region than the global financial crisis, according to senior regional government and regulatory officials attending the Asian Financial Forum in Hong Kong.

Excess liquidity continues to present significant challenges to Asia, according to senior government and regulatory finance heads from around the region speaking at the Asian Financial Forum in Hong Kong.

Highlighting these potential dangers, KC Chan, secretary for financial services and the treasury for Hong Kong, said that because of the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997-98, Asian countries have adopted a more conservative attitude to macro-prudential policy. This has helped the region better
