Blackberry shutdown avoided

VIRGINIA – A Federal Judge in the state of Virginia has avoided a much-feared shutdown of the BackBerry email service in the US, urging the firms engaged in a long-running legal battle over a patent infringement to settle. Research In Motion (RIM), the producer of the Blackberry service is accused of infringing on patents of NTP, a Virginia-based patent holding firm that does not develop technology or manufacture any products.

In avoiding the shut-down in his February 24 ruling, US District Judge James Spencer set the stage for a continued battle between the firms. His decision also means that RIM customers will not have to go through the inconvenience of having to install a new piece of software to keep the service running.

RIM says it has adopted a contingency plan, known as a workaround plan, to avoid a possible shut-down of blackberry services in the US. That workaround strategy will continue to be on 'stand-by'
