The all-seeing eye
The 18th century English utilitarian philosopher Jeremy Bentham is famous for his concept of the 'panopticon', a circular prison whose warder was placed at the centre, able to see into every cell. The idea was humane in intent. The knowledge of perfect surveillance would impose self-discipline on the prisoners, avoiding the need for a large prison staff constantly administering
