Sydney Futures Exchange to launch interest rate swaps

The Sydney Futures Exchange (SFE) will launch interest rate swap futures trading in November, the exchange said.

SFE Corporation, the exchange’s operator, said it intends to commence trading of three-year and 10-year contracts on November 12. The exchange currently lists futures and options on 90-day bank bills, three-year treasury bonds and 10-year treasury bonds.

“With changes to the composition of the Australian debt market involving an increase in non-government debt issuance, customers are now seeking exchange-traded instruments that allow them to manage their underlying exposure even more accurately,” said Peter Hiom, general manager of strategy and business development at the SFE. “The launch of three and 10-year interest rate swap futures contracts… will provide users with the appropriate risk management tool.”

The exchange said it expects “near-term” volumes to be modest.
