The number of bulk purchase annuity deals in the UK has grown rapidly over the past year. What is behind the new-found willingness of pension funds to offload their liabilities? Ryan Davidson investigates


From a mere trickle last year, the pension buyout sector in the UK has become a raging torrent of activity. Encouraged by falling prices, a flood of pension schemes have looked to offload liabilities to one of the many bulk purchase annuity (BPA) providers now active in the UK market. So strong has been demand that some providers say they risk getting swept away by the number of pricing requests, while analysts question the sustainability of business at current levels.
