Fed warning on hedge funds’ margin requirements

Margin requirements for hedge funds and derivatives counterparties may be about to increase in response to growing regulatory concern over hedge funds’ risk management practices.

Speaking to an audience of Bond Market Association members, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Timothy Geither, said on Friday that more “care and conservatism” was needed in risk management practices. He warned dealers of the need to take a “cold, hard look” at financing conditions and margin practice
