Freddie Mac gives private insurers a helping hand

US mortgage agency relaxes criteria to help private mortgage insurers rebuild capital reserves

The beleaguered private mortgage insurance industry could see its troubles eased as requirements from US mortgage agency Freddie Mac are relaxed, although rating agencies have warned the sector is unlikely to return to full health until 2010.

Freddie Mac will temporarily change its eligibility requirements for private insurers, to increase the claims-paying and capital retention capacities of mortgage insurers during the current market correction. It has also said it will now accept policies
