The Big Three auto manufacturers, Ford, General Motors and DaimlerChrysler, continue to wrestle with a raft of problems: fierce competition from the Japanese car manufacturers, high fuel prices, ratings pressure and high levels of inventory, to name just a few. The sector has become increasingly vulnerable to volatility on the back of negative headline events, such as recent news of the SEC’s probe into pension and benefits accounting at GM and Ford.

However, weak fundamentals are somewhat
