Risk management: Banks gain credit

Chinese banks' international exposure is growing and several are adopting sophisticated risk management techniques for debt exposure. Could this prove a catalyst for an improved credit risk culture in China? By Pamela Tang

Chinese banks have become more visible globally since their landmark initial public offerings in the past couple of years - most notably, the record floatation last year of Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC). They have also had to help finance and service the activities of their core clients that have steadily grown internationally. But risk management at Chinese banks - despite some significant improvements - is still a long way behind that displayed by international peers.
