Refco launches alternative investments division

US futures broker Refco is launching an alternative investments division to sell structured products that incorporate hedge funds, futures, currency and various other derivatives.

Refco said the new group, Refco Alternative Investments (RAI), will aim to provide products with enhanced investment returns but also principal protection. It has already structured products for a European private bank, a French corporation and several US institutional investors, the firm said. But it declined to provide further details on these deals.

“RAI can structure investment opportunities on single managers, and/or a basket of managers, both directly and through structured note programmes,” said David Kugler, senior vice-president and head of RAI. “The RAI approach is an open architecture platform capitalising on the best worldwide issuers, investment managers, derivatives experts and other financial service organisations.”

RAI will operate globally with nine sales and distribution staff reporting to Kugler.
