While the flow of institutional money into hedge funds has been well documented, those dipping their toes in the alternative investment market waters may not realise the plethora of methods available to access absolute returns.

Lars Hagenbuch, principal, investment strategist at Barclays Global Investors (BGI), says there are two routes for direct entry into the field via 'multi-strategy' funds and funds of funds. Access to absolute returns can be via single funds or via funds of hedge funds
