As some financial institutions crumpled and others looked likely to follow suit during the worst of the crisis, banks scrambled to check their total exposure to threatened entities. To the dismay of many senior managers, and the consternation of the regulators, it took not just hours or days, but weeks before some banks could put together a comprehensive exposure picture. That experience has forced industry participants to think hard about how to improve systems for monitoring and measuring
