Taiwan limits short-selling on 150 stocks

Taiwan’s financial regulator today placed restrictions on the short-selling of 150 key index stocks for two weeks from September 22, following similar moves by Australian, Taiwanese, UK and US regulators, among others.

Short-selling of the 150 stocks – members of the Taiwan 50 Index, Taiwan Mid-Cap 100 and Taiwan Technology indexes – will be banned when they trade below the previous session’s closing price, the Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) said today.

“The move is to maintain market order and stability, raise investor confidence and boost the market,” added the FSC. The halt will start from September 22 and will be in effect until October 3, unless it is extended further.
