More education needed to curb identity theft

NEW YORK -- Education of consumers is the greatest weapon against identity theft, according to Wayne Abernathy, the assistant secretary for financial institutions at the US Treasury.

Abernathy said at the release of an American Express identity theft report in New York that the continuing incidence of identity theft means federal agencies and private firms must step up their efforts to educate consumers.

Abernathy said the US Treasury was pressing hard for legislation that will give financial institutions new tools to fight identity theft.

"From December 1, 2004, every consumer will be eligible to receive their credit report if they want so they can keep track of their credit
