Latest job changes across the industry

As part of a wider management shake-up, Tim Throsby, chief executive officer (CEO) of Barclays’ corporate and investment bank, has left after only two years. Throsby joined the UK bank in 2017 after spending almost seven years at JP Morgan, most recently as global head of equities.

Jes Staley, Barclays’ group CEO, has assumed the role of interim chief of Barclays Bank PLC, the legal entity that houses the investment banking and international divisions previously headed by Throsby.

New York-based Joe McGrath has been named global head of banking, a unit comprising Barclays’ advisory, and debt and equity capital markets businesses. McGrath joined Barclays in 2006 from Goldman Sachs. Meanwhile, Stephen Dainton, the former global head of equities, has been appointed interim global head of markets, leading the business across credit, distribution, equities and macro. He is based in London. Both report to Staley.

Paul Compton, group chief operating officer (COO), has added the title of president of Barclays Bank PLC. Ashok Vaswani, currently CEO of Barclays UK, has switched to a newly created role of global head of consumer banking and payments. Matt Hammerstein, head of retail lending, has been appointed as the new head of Barclays UK, subject to regulatory approval.

In a separate move, Simon Denny, former head of corporate finance at Deutsche Bank in South Africa, has joined Barclays as co-head of banking for South Africa, according to a spokesperson for the bank. In his new role, Denny reports to Philip Lindop, a senior natural resources banker.


Ross McEwan has resigned as CEO of Royal Bank of Scotland after five and half years in the role, the bank announced in late April. He has a 12-month notice period and will remain at the helm until a successor has been found. McEwan joined RBS in 2012 as head of the UK retail business, moving on to the top job just over a year later. Prior to that, he was group executive for retail banking services at Commonwealth Bank of Australia.


Tin Lau is set to join TP Icap in May as head of financial and strategic risk, says a spokesperson for the company. He will report to chief risk officer David Goodchild. Lau’s latest experience is with the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority as a structured finance specialist.

Mike du Plessis will also come on board, on July 8, as senior managing director in TP Icap’s institutional services division, the firm has announced. He will be based in New York and will report to John Ruskin, chief executive of institutional services. Du Plessis has spent eight years at UBS in senior roles, including global head of foreign exchange, rates and credit execution services, and global head of exchange-traded derivatives macro execution.


Goldman Sachs has hired Oliver Wunde for the corporate equity derivatives team within its investment bank, says a spokesperson for the bank. Wunde joins from JP Morgan, where he worked in the special situations and strategic derivatives business.

Davide Trinello, also from JP Morgan, will join Goldman in June to run the strategic linear business within equity derivatives trading in Europe, the spokesperson adds. He will report to Andrew Fisher, who heads up flow in Europe, Middle East and Africa and strategic equity derivatives trading. Trinello has spent 13 years at JP Morgan, reaching a senior position in equity derivatives trading.

Going the other way, Jesse Greif, head of product management for electronic principal liquidity solutions, has left Goldman. And so
has Michael Cerda, chief product officer at Goldman’s digital retail bank Marcus.

Talat Khan has joined Cantor Fitzgerald as head of European equities, according to a spokesperson for the firm. He reports globally to Pascal Bandelier, global head of equities, and locally in the UK to Angelo Sofocleous, chief executive of Cantor Fitzgerald’s European operation. Khan’s previous job was with Goldman, where he worked in European equities until November 2018.  


JP Morgan has created a new global equities insurance structuring group within global equity derivatives structuring, according to an internal memo seen by Risk.net. It will be headed by David Rademeyer, previously head of equities insurance structuring in the US. He will continue to be based in New York and will report to Emmanuel Naim, head of equity structuring for the Americas.


The president of Citigroup and chief executive of its institutional clients group (ICG), Jamie Forese, has decided to retire after 34 years with the bank, says an internal memo seen by Risk.net. Under his leadership, the ICG, which houses Citigroup’s investment banking and trading units, generated roughly half the bank’s total revenues in 2018.

Forese will stay at Citigroup through the summer, helping his successor in the ICG role, Paco Ybarra, with the transition.

Ybarra assumed his new position on May 1, having previously served as deputy head of the ICG and head of markets and securities services.

Carey Lathrop, formerly chief operating officer for Citibank North America, and Andy Morton, global head of G10 rates, markets treasury and finance, have been named as the co-heads of markets and securities services.

Mary McNiff, chief auditor for the past few years, has taken on the role of CBNA CEO. She also oversees global data aggregation and reporting and chairs the Citi Business Practices Committee. McNiff is succeeded by Jessica Roos, previously chief auditor for the ICG.

Francisco Aristeguieta, Citigoup’s CEO for Asia-Pacific, left the bank on April 19. He will join State Street in July as CEO of its international business, the custodian bank has announced. Aristeguieta will be responsible for all of State Street’s business activities outside of the US. Initially based in Hong Kong, he will report to State Street president and CEO Ron O’Hanley and become a member of the bank’s management committee.


Zak de Mariveles, head of structured products sales to independent financial advisers at Societe Generale, has left, a spokesperson for the French bank says. According to his LinkedIn profile, de Mariveles departed in February but the move has not been reported anywhere else.

Also according to LinkedIn, he founded Structured Financial Consultancy in the same month and continues to serve as chairman of the UK Structured Products Association.

Meanwhile, Societe Generale has announced it has appointed Antoine Broquereau as UK head of global markets within its corporate and investment banking division. Based in London, Broquereau reports to Sadia Ricke, chief UK officer for the division, and Jean-Francois Gregoire, head of global markets. Broquereau will also keep his current role as global head of engineering for fixed income and currencies within the global markets business, a position he has held since 2015.


Kevin Burke has re-joined Deutsche Bank as head of institutional and treasury coverage for Asia-Pacific, a spokesperson for the bank says. He left in July 2017 to join Standard Chartered as global head of financial market sales. In his new role, he reports to Louise Kitchen, head of institutional and treasury coverage at Deutsche Bank.

The German bank has also hired Bret Corrigan as a director in high-yield credit trading. Corrigan moved over from Nomura, where he worked in high-yield and distressed credit trading. In his new role, Corrigan reports to Paul Huchro who leads the credit trading team.

Elena Isaico has joined Deutsche Bank as head of European fixed income emerging market sales. Isaico was previously at Barclays’ investment bank where she was most recently a managing director.


CME Group is planning to cut several executives at its recently acquired Nex Markets business, including global head of forex and head of product Tim Cartledge and global head of sales Jim Iorio, according to three market sources.

Adam Vos has been promoted to global head of forex, fixed income and equities at BNY Mellon, according to a spokesperson for the bank. The move follows the departure of Michelle Neal, chief executive of BNY Mellon’s markets business, who is joining the Royal Bank of Canada.

Before switching roles in March, Vos had served as global head of forex for almost three years. Prior to joining BNY Mellon in 2016, he spent 12 years at Deutsche Bank.  


Following Sandra O’Connor’s retirement earlier in April, Tom Wipf has been appointed as the new chair of the Alternative Reference Rates Committee for a one-year term, which may be extended. Wipf now holds the position alongside his role of vice-chairman of institutional securities at Morgan Stanley. He has served as the bank’s representative on the ARRC since 2014, and also sits on the board of directors of the International Swaps and Derivatives Association.


Three new members have joined Isda’s board of directors: Erik Müller, CEO of Eurex Clearing and a member of its executive board; Andrew Ng, group executive and head of treasury and markets at DBS Bank; and Shigeru Nonomura, a rates trading head in Nomura’s Global Markets division.

Isda has also hired Amy Caruso as head of collateral initiatives, according to a spokesperson for the association. She started in her new role on March 1 but the move has not been reported anywhere else. Caruso joined Isda from the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC). She is based in New York and reports to Clive Ansell, head of market infrastructure and technology at Isda.


The US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency has named Maryann Kennedy as its next senior deputy comptroller for large bank supervision. Kennedy now manages nearly 800 supervisors of the country’s largest national banks and federal branches and agencies. She also becomes a member of the agency’s executive committee.

Previously, Kennedy was the OCC’s deputy comptroller for large bank supervision and earlier served as examiner-in-charge for JP Morgan and TD Bank. She reports to Morris Morgan, the agency’s COO since January.


The DTCC has added three new members to its board of directors: Kieran Hanrahan, a managing director in JP Morgan’s corporate and investment bank; Graeme McEvoy, a managing director in the global operations division at Morgan Stanley; and Joseph Noto, a managing director and treasurer for the Americas at Barclays.
