About the course

New course coming soon

The three lines model – formerly known as the three lines of defence model – remains the most widely used framework for risk management and governance in financial services. However, many organisations continue to face challenges in applying it effectively, with blurred responsibilities, duplication of effort and weak escalation pathways undermining its impact.

This e-learning course equips learners with practical strategies to deploy the three lines model with greater impact. Learners will explore the distinct roles and responsibilities of each line, clarify role boundaries and enhance collaboration across risk, compliance, audit and business functions.

Through expert-led instruction, case studies and interactive exercises, participants will explore where the model often breaks down and how to address those gaps. The course also considers how the framework can better support strategic planning, and a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.

Learning objectives

  • Define and describe the three lines model and how it supports effective risk governance
  • Clarify the roles, responsibilities, and accountabilities across the three lines
  • Identify common implementation challenges and practical breakdowns in ownership, oversight, and assurance
  • Analyse how the model should be embedded into strategy, decision-making, and day-to-day operations
  • Evolve the model in response to change, complexity, and regulatory expectations
  • Reflect on how to improve role clarity and escalation in your own organisation
