The Tohoku earthquake, also known as the Great East Japan Earthquake, on March 11 left 20,000 people dead or missing in the affected areas, and was at magnitude 9.0 – the most powerful earthquake to hit Japan since records began (and among the most powerful ever recorded worldwide).
