Williams to retain energy trading business

Oklahoma-based energy company Williams said late last week it will continue operating its energy trading business, having failed to sell the rest of the wholesale power division. The company is focusing on long-term supply contracts and doing only a very small amount of speculative, short-term trading, said spokesman Kelly Swan.

Williams’ announcement comes as most US energy companies are still seeking to distance themselves from energy trading, a trend that resulted from the downfall of Houston energy trader Enron.

Williams cited several reasons for its decision to retain the wholesale power business: the free cashflow generated by the wholesale business; the depressed wholesale power markets’ effect on the marketability of wholesale power assets and contracts; and the company’s progress over the past two years in
