Italian stock exchange moves towards IPO

The Borsa Italiana, the Milan-based stock exchange, is preparing for flotation, in a move that could speed up consolidation among European exchanges.

The exchange announced late on Wednesday that it would begin a feasibility study into a possible flotation on the Italian stock market.

Massimo Capuano, Borsa Italiana’s chief executive, said on December 31 that 2006 would see Borsa Italiana "assert its proposal-making role in the consolidation process among the various European stock markets". He added the Borsa's joint ownership with Euronext of the MTS Italian government bond platform would help it form more international links.
