ASX to launch electricity futures

The exchange is currently working with a number of industry participants such as CS Energy, Duke Energy International and Energex to develop the contract, scheduled to start trading this October.

The development follows a representation to the exchange by leading energy companies almost a year ago, which requested the development of exchange-traded versions of over-the-counter electricity futures contracts, the ASX said.

"Australian energy companies should benefit enormously by being able to minimise their exposure to counterparty risk through ASX's regulated futures clearing house," said Chris Hamilton, executive general manager, clearing and settlement.
