IOSCO gets in on the valuation dilemma

Timothy Spangler, partner at Kaye Scholer, discusses IOSCO's principles on valuations

The International Organisation of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) this month issued for public review and comment its Principles for the Valuation of Hedge Fund Assets.

The purpose of the principles is to ensure that hedge funds' financial instruments are appropriately valued and that fund investors are not disadvantaged by inaccurate valuations.

Central to the principles is that hedge funds adopt and operate robust portfolio-valuation policies and procedures. The principles describe techniques
