Mirant boosts weather desk

Atlanta-based energy company Mirant has expanded its weather derivatives trading team from four to eight people over the last few months, bucking the recent trend amongst US energy firms of cutting back on non-core risk management operations.

A spokeswoman for Mirant says the company sees continued opportunities in the weather risk sector as part of its overall risk management strategy. The expansion has also been driven by continued customer demand for products for hedging against unsuitable
