Equity release pensions take off in Spain

A new wave of products is starting to hit the Spanish market, which allows retirees over the age of 60 to top up their pensions using their house (or part of their house) as collateral.

Termed a hipoteca inversa, or reverse mortgage, only a handful of savings banks provide the product at the moment - but Rosa Carneros, product manager at Caixa Sabadell, one of the first companies to offer the product, says that interest in the concept is growing. Carneros likens the idea to an endowment
