One-tenth of US banks exceed CRE concentration thresholds

US supervisors face operational challenge with constellation of 536 lenders above risk benchmarks at end-2023

More than a tenth of all US commercial banks meet concentration thresholds in commercial real estate (CRE) that regulators say would warrant heightened supervisory scrutiny, Risk Quantum’s analysis of 4,641 firms shows.

The findings underscore the challenge faced by supervisors in pinpointing potential epicentres of systemic shocks across such a vast sample of financial institutions.
