Profile: SEB strives for total operational risk acceptance

STOCKHOLM, Sweden — Within the discipline of operational risk, it's often fancy mathematical models and souped-up databases that executives choose to focus on. But Lars Hansén, manager of Swedish financial company SEB's group op risk team, says it's the marketing of operational risk management internally that is at the core of the firm's op risk strategy.

"The big challenge is making risk management a natural part of day-to-day business across the group," says Hansén. "Basically we’re selling the idea of being a little more careful."

Hansén’s Stockholm-based team have put in a "huge sales effort" to promote a healthy operational risk culture in SEB. This involved meeting people within the company, educating them on the importance of op risk management and providing them with comprehensive support. For example, SEB in February held a seminar
