US G-Sibs’ OTC derivatives hit record $243 trillion

JP Morgan leads US dealers in boosting notional amounts during volatile first quarter

Over-the-counter derivatives notionals at the eight US global systemically important banks ballooned 18% during the first quarter, signalling an increased concentration of risk under their belts.

The notional value of their derivatives contracts – held for both trading and hedging purposes – climbed from $206.8 trillion at end-2022 to $243.6 trillion, the most since Q2 2016 at least.
