UK police to take on financial crime

London -- The UK’s Home Office announced in mid-December 2003 that the City of London Police would be taking over the investigation of all financial crime cases in the southeast of that country. The dramatic move comes in the wake of criticisms by financial industry officials and experts on the UK government’s handling of law enforcement activities in the financial crime sector.

The force will oversee all financial crime investigations in London, Kent, Sussex, Surrey, the Thames Valley and Essex. It will also play a greater role in investigations by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO), and is the first group to be named a ‘lead force’ under the Home Office’s new strategy of allowing police forces with specific expertise to operate on a regional basis.
