Accounting practices exacerbate the current credit crisis, argues Satyajit Das in his take on an area of further problems for the derivatives markets

As the credit crisis began last year, paradoxically, no-one actually defaulted. Apart from subprime delinquencies, corporate defaults were at a record low. Instead, investors in highly (AAA or AA) rated securities, which are unlikely to suffer real losses if held to maturity, faced paper or mark-to-market (MtM) losses.
