The dearth of long-dated bonds in Asia poses asset and liability risk management challenges for insurance firms. Joe Marsh talks to Sun Life Financial's Hong Kong chief executive, Roger Steel, about how the Canadian insurer copes with the issue

Possibly the biggest asset-liability management (ALM) issue for life insurers in Asia is the lack of long-dated bonds available in the region, something Roger Steel is well aware of after a career of close to 20 years in the industry. The Sydney native is the Hong Kong chief executive of Canadian insurance company Sun Life Financial and has worked at other life insurers Asia since 1994.
