BONY data tapes lost in Transit

NEW YORK - Bank of New York Mellon has admitted losing a box of back-up computer tapes containing the personal information of 4.5 million customers. The unencrypted tapes contained names, addresses, social security numbers, and possibly account numbers and balances. The tapes were lost in transit to a storage facility on February 27.

The box was transported in a truck belonging to storage firm Archive Systems, according to Connecticut attorney general Richard Blumenthal. He said the bank admitted the lock on the vehicle was broken and left unattended several times. The bank began notifying affected customers of the data loss six weeks ago and is offering one year of credit monitoring, which the attorney general described as "grossly inadequate".
