Mike Thomas has enjoyed success with Martin Currie's hedge fund by capitalising on inefficiencies in the Japanese market

In Edinburgh, Martin Currie's Japan hedge fund has got off to a flying start. Assets have been accrued rapidly as news of the long/short equity fund's success has spread with substantial inflows in the past two months, bumping it up from $US65m in November 2001 to $US80m at the close of last year. Managed by Michael Thomas, the head of Martin Currie's Japan team which has steered outperformance
