An unexpected career change when most people would be contemplating partial retirement led Phil Goldstein into the hedge fund world where he is renowned for his pugnacious defiance of the Securities and Exchange Commission as well as his pursuit of activist shareholding. Phil Goldstein has never been afraid to stick his head above the parapets. The 64-year-old co-founder of Bulldog Investors hit the headlines in 2006 when he successfully challenged the US Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) hedge fund registration rule.
