US pushes agreement on carbon storage research

The US government has launched an international research and development programme to reduce power plant emissions by pumping carbon dioxide (CO2) into deep storage.

Carbon storage, known as sequestration, aims to stop CO2 from power plant emissionscollecting in the atmosphere. The favoured technique will involve separatingCO2 from the combustion process in the power plant and permanently storing itunderground in oil and gas reservoirs, coal seams and aquifers. Carbon dioxidecould also be stored in forests or the deep ocean.
