In January, Duke Energy spun off its natural gas business into a stand-alone company – Spectra Energy. David Watkins talks with Martha Wyrsch, Spectra president and chief executive, about the benefits of a pure-play firm versus an energy superstore

As the plural of 'spectrum', Spectra might seem an inappropriate name for a company that has just narrowed its focus. Yet for Martha Wyrsch, Spectra Energy Transmission's president and chief executive, the name embodies the company's new emphasis on pure-play natural gas activities in gathering and processing, transmission and storage, and distribution.
