The Western Interconnection power grid links generation facilities in 11 western-US states, two Canadian provinces and a small part of northern Mexico near the Californian border. In principle, a network that ties together coal, oil, natural gas and nuclear thermal plants with hydroelectric resources and a small but growing portfolio of renewable energy sources, should offer enviable flexibility
