The US government-sponsored mortgage enterprises (GSEs), Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, have had a hard time avoiding the headlines in recent times. The subprime crisis initially put the spotlight on them as potential saviours of the market, as participants confidently backed the GSEs to sweep up huge swathes of distressed mortgage assets and alleviate some of the pressures on the US housing sector
