New York Governor to form state-wide committee

Governor of New York Eliot Spitzer plans to form a committee to modernise financial services regulation in the state. Bringing together executives from a number of Wall Street banks as well as the chief executives of financial giants such as Citigroup and AIG, the panel will seek to address continuing concerns that London is taking an ever-growing bite out of New York's share of international investment.

To tackle this, Spitzer plans to streamline and update regulation in the state to remove unnecessary duplication that offers no value or protection to either firms or investors. One of the measures likely to be under discussion is a switch to more principles-based regulation, mirroring the route currently being taken by the SEC and other federal institutions.
