Green futures

The launch of certified emission reduction credit (CER) futures on Indian exchanges is breathing new life into CER origination projects in India. Speculators are creating liquidity in CERs and, as a result, more carbon-financing options. By Catherine Lacoursiere

The Indian carbon credit dilemma is well known to international buyers of certified emission reduction credits (CERs). India generates more than one third of clean development mechanism (CDM) projects and CERs, yet Indian CERs can be hard to come by. The big Indian firms that generate the majority of CERs are notorious hoarders and tough price negotiators.
